The decoration is awarded only at the highest levels of the military while assigned to a joint activity. The medal may also be awarded to other senior officers whose direct and individual contributions to national security or defense are recognized as being so exceptional in scope and value as to be equivalent to contributions normally associated with positions encompassing broader responsibilities. It is the United States's highest peacetime defense award. Normally, such responsibilities deserving of the Defense Distinguished Service Medal are held by the most senior officers such as the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Chiefs and Vice Chiefs of the Services, and Commanders and Deputy Commanders of the Unified Commands whose duties bring them into direct contact with the Secretary of Defense and other senior officials. This decoration takes precedence over the Distinguished Service Medals of the separate services and is not to be awarded to any individual for a period of service for which an Army, Navy, Air Force or Coast Guard Distinguished Service Medal is awarded.

Qualifying operations include: Operations Allied Force (24 March – 10 June 1999), Joint Guardian (11 June 1999 – date to be determined), Allied Harbour (4 April – 1 September 1999), Sustain Hope/Shining Hope (4 April – 10 July 1999), Noble Anvil (24 March – 20 July 1999), and Kosovo Task Forces Hawk (5 April – 24 June 1999), Saber (31 March – 8 July 1999), Falcon (11 June 1999 – DTBD), and Hunter (1 April – 1 November 1999). Members who provided direct support for 30 consecutive or 60 nonconsecutive days to one of these operations, at home-station, or from outside of the geographic area of combat qualify for the award. The award is only authorized to Air Force personnel and is prohibited for issuance if another campaign or service medal has already been received for the operation in question. The Bronze Star

Lord Clan End Of Year Prizegiving 2013 TheBronzeStar
Lord Clan End Of Year Prizegiving 2013 BronzeStarRibbon

A U.S. Armed Forces individual military decoration and the fourth-highest award for bravery, heroism or meritorious service. Awarded to a member of the military who, while serving in or with the military of the United States after December 6, 1941, distinguished him or herself by heroic or meritorious achievement or service, not involving participation in aerial flight, while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States; while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force; or while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party. Awards may be made for acts of heroism, performed under circumstances described above, which are of lesser degree than required for the award of the Silver Star. Awards may also be made to recognize single acts of merit or meritorious service. The required achievement or service while of lesser degree than that required for the award of the Legion of Merit must nevertheless have been meritorious and accomplished with distinction. To be eligible for the Bronze Star Medal, a military member must be getting hostile fire/imminent danger pay, during the event for which the medal is to be awarded. The Bronze Star Medal is typically referred to by its full name (including the word "Medal") to differentiate the decoration from bronze service stars which are worn on campaign medals and service awards.

The Pour le Mérite (The Blue Max)

Lord Clan End Of Year Prizegiving 2013 TheBlueMax_zps4766eab0

The Pour le Mérite, known informally as the Blue Max (German: Blauer Max), was the Kingdom of Prussia's highest order of merit. It was first founded in 1740 by King Frederick II of Prussia. It was named in French, which was the leading international language and language of the Prussian royal court of that era. It was awarded strictly as a recognition of extraordinary personal achievement, rather than as a general marker of social status or a courtesy-honour, although certain restrictions of social class and military rank were applied. One of the most notable people to gain the award was Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen, otherwise known as the Red Baron. The award was given as both a military (1740-1918) and civil (1740-1810, after 1842 as a separate class) honour. A separate civil class of the Pour le Mérite, the Pour le mérite für Wissenschaften und Künste, was created in 1842 to honour accomplishments in the arts and sciences. This version of the order was revived as an independent organization in 1923, and again in 1952, with the President of Germany replacing the King of Prussia as head of the order. This version of the honour is still active.

The Pour le Mérite is an "order", in which a person is admitted into membership, and should not be referred to as a "medal" or "decoration".

The Pour le Mérite is awarded to the Member of the Year of the Lord Clan.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Please bear with the records being out of date for a while as the 10 day standdown period starting from Christmas Day will be in effect; that means no one is expected to be active in these ten days and all daycounting of "inactivity" is on hold until the 10 days is up. All awards and promotions are in effect immediately. Merry Christmas to all and have a safe one!

Congratulations to all Lords!
